AI.ChatGPT and Your Lawyers and You: A Discussion on Large Language Models and Legal Research

Thursday, 6th July 2023 at 1:00pm

AI. ChatGPT. Large Language Models (otherwise known as LLMs). It feels like we're on the edge of a seismic shift in the legal sector as firms and service providers look to leverage these technologies.

But did you hear the one about the lawyer in New York who used ChatGPT to help research a legal brief, and ended up submitting entirely made-up citations to court?

So what opportunities do LLMs provide? What are the risks? And what does this all mean for us as legal information professionals?

Join us for a talk on LLMs (such as ChatGPT) and legal research as Daniel Hoadley (Head of Data Science & Analytics in the Strategy team at Mishcon de Reya) unpacks these issues for us.

Daniel Hoadley is Head of Data Science & Analytics in the Strategy team at Mishcon de Reya, leading the firm’s use of data and machine learning techniques to support its contentious practices. He is experienced in research and development in the legal sector, with a particular focus on case law and data generated during litigation. In addition to working closely with MDR Lab and Practice Transformation teams, Daniel supports the firm’s use of data for public advocacy and purpose-driven insights.

Daniel has been recognised as an expert in court data and developed the Blackstone natural language processing system. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Inner Temple in 2009 and spent 10 years at the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales, where he was a Law Reporter, Business Development Manager, Research and Development Manager, Head of Marketing, and Head of Design and Research.
